sp; HISTORICAL NOTE

  or all its remoteness and high, inaccessible mountains, Afghanistan played an important role in the Great Game— the epic, nineteenth-century struggle between Britain and Russia for control of Central Asia.

  Afghanistan's value lay in its trade routes, for it stood at the heart of a network of ancient caravan tracks known collectively as the Silk Route. Those narrow, treacherous roads connecting Russia and China with India and Rome had been used for thousands of years to transport rock salt, lapis lazuli, tea, and silk, but they had also served as invasion routes for the armies of Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and other conquerors.

  By the late 1830s, the British had established colonies in much of southern and central India and had begun to look north, toward the rich kingdom of the Punjab on the Afghan border. But even as they approached Afghanistan from the southeast, their rivals, the Russians, were moving down from the northwest, and had begun to threaten Persia.

  It was not difficult for the British to convince themselves that the Russians would soon take over Afghanistan, invade India, and snatch away Britain's possessions there. Their solution was to preempt this threat by deposing the Afghan king, Amir Dost Mohammad, and replacing him with Shah Shuja, his British-leaning rival.

  In 1839, the British implemented their plan. Having driven out Amir Dost Mohammad and declared Shah Shuja king, they settled their army and ten thousand camp followers into a cantonment, or fort, north of Kabul, and sent for their wives and children.

  Two years later, they paid dearly for their folly.

  Of the characters in Companions of Paradise, Akbar Khan, Abdullah Khan, Aminullah Khan, Shah Shuja-ul-Mulk, Sir Alexander Burnes, Sir William Macnaghten, Lady Macnaghten, General Sir William Elphinstone, General Sale, his wife Lady Florentia Sale, his son-in-law Captain Sturt, Brigadier Shelton, and Major Wade are all historical figures.

  Mariana Givens, her uncle Adrian Lamb, and her aunt Claire Lamb are fictional characters, as are Harry Fitzgerald, Charles Mott, Hassan Ali Khan, his son Saboor, his father Shaikh Waliullah Karakoyia, and his aunt Safiya Sultana, Munshi Sahib, Haji Khan, Nur Rahman, and all the servants.

  March 21, 1841

  Mariana Givens sat at a small camp table inside her tent doorway and looked uneasily at the stony landscape in front of her.

  She could see nothing unusual about the caravan halting station of Butkhak. Its scrubby, sloping hills seemed to fold into each other in the same way as those she had seen at every stopping place between India and Afghanistan. The walled town itself looked unremarkable. Even the ragged nomads with their black tents, their camels, and their herds of jostling sheep were identical to the ones she and her English traveling companions had encountered for the past six weeks.

  She shivered, and adjusted her shawls. Why, then, did this place, only a day's march from Kabul, tug insistently at her imagination? Perhaps it had been responsible for the strange, upsetting vision that had come to her a few nights earlier, as she lay waiting for sleep.

  Mariana was no stranger to prescient dreams, for they had come to her before, but no previous vision of hers had been as troubling as the great funeral procession that had appeared without warning and passed before her—a silent horde of English people, its leaders on horseback, the rest of the mourners in carriages or on foot, all wearing solemn black, down to the tiniest bonneted girl.

  To what melancholy destination had they been going as they filed down a rock-strewn slope, and out of sight? And why had her queasy dread at the sight of them been accompanied by a quickening in her heart, as if something quite different and very important was about to happen to her?

  A folded paper lay in front of her on the table. Covered with elegant right-to-left script, it was her Persian poetry lesson for the day. As she glanced at it without interest, a discreet shuffling came from outside.

  A moment later, an elderly man appeared, shoeless, in her doorway. He wore the characteristic long shirt and baggy trousers of northern India and Afghanistan. A shawl lay draped across his shoulders.

  “As-salaam-o-alaikum, Bibi,” he offered mildly, and he stepped inside.

  Mariana leapt to her feet, her skirts swaying, the fingers of her right hand pressed to her forehead in greeting. “And peace be upon you, Munshi Sahib,” she replied, glad that her aunt Claire had not witnessed such respectful treatment of an Indian native.

  Her munshi was exactly the person she wanted to see.

  At first glance, Mariana's language teacher seemed no more than a wispy old man with a three-day growth of beard and a qaraquli hat set squarely on his narrow head, but Munshi Sahib was far more than that. He was a Follower of the Path, and a custodian of secrets that Mariana longed to learn.

  He did not sit down, although she had invited him to do so many times. Instead, he came and stood as usual beside her chair, rocking a little on his stocking feet, his hands clasped behind his back.

  “Have you finished your translation, Bibi?” he asked, inclining his head toward the paper on the table.

  “I have, Munshi Sahib,” she replied, frowning up at him, “but today is not a day for mystic poetry. There is something else I need to know.”

  Her dread returned as she told him of her dream. While she spoke, he shifted his gaze to the doorway and looked outside, as if he were imagining the same column of black-clad mourners marching noiselessly past her tent.

  “Can you tell me what it means?” she asked, when she had finished.

  He looked into her questioning face, his expression unreadable. “I can, Bibi,” he replied gently, “but not today.”

  “Please, Munshi Sahib,” she begged.

  “I will say this much,” he said gravely. “Whatever may happen in the future, you must not fear for yourself. You must allow yourself to be drawn toward your destiny.”

  He straightened his shoulders. “I will recite a verse,” he announced. “It does not explain your dream, but it offers knowledge that may prove useful to you when the time comes.”

  With that, he began to declaim in a language Mariana did not understand, his eyes half closed, his voice a minor singsong. He drew out some sounds and hurried past others, producing the same throaty vowels and half-stops that had beckoned to her ever since she had first heard them.

  He was speaking neither Urdu nor Persian, for she had studied both languages.

  “I have recited a small portion of the Holy Qur'an in Arabic,” he said when he had finished, confirming her guess.

  “Like all Qur'anic verses, this one has multiple meanings,” he added. “I will give you the most straightforward of them. You must keep it in your heart.”

  She nodded, wondering why he looked at her with such intensity.

  “I call to witness,” he intoned, bringing his hands in front of him, moving them in arcs as he drew out his words, “the ruddy glow of sunset;

  “The Night and its Homing, and

  The Moon in her Fullness;

  Thou shalt surely travel

  From stage to stage.”

  She nodded, then unable to help herself, she blurted out her other question, the one she had wanted to ask ever since they left India, three weeks earlier.

  “Please tell me, Munshi Sahib,” she pleaded, certain he could tell her, but equally convinced he would not, “will I return to Lahore? Will I ever see Saboor or his father again?”

  Her teacher smiled. “That, Bibi,” he said gently, “is for you to discover yourself.”

  Why had he chosen that particular verse? she wondered, as he vanished around a corner of her tent after bidding her a polite good-bye.

  Did it explain her dream? Did it reveal her future?

  THAT SAME afternoon in a bright courtyard in the walled city of Lahore, a merchant raised his voice.

  “Speak to us of Paradise,” he said.

  He wore gold rings and an intricately embroidered shawl, but for all his obvious prosperity, the merchant lowered his eyes before the man in a tall, starched headdress who sat before hi
m on a padded platform, the sun warming his back.
